Hey Everyone
We had an article published in the Blue Mountains Gazette this Week! Read it here…
Roller Derby Hits The Blue Mountains… Hard
Katoomba, NSW, 13th June, 2011 – In the past couple of years roller derby has exploded in Australia and now it has hit the Mountains. Starting in Chicago, USA in 1935, roller derby has a reputation for being rough, aggressive, and above all, entertaining. The sport declined in popularity in the 1970’s, but was revived and reinvented in 2001 by a grassroots league in Austin, Texas. There are now over 350 leagues worldwide. Australia currently has roller derby leagues in every state and more and more are popping up all the time. The Blue Mountains is the latest place to catch the bug.
Roller derby isn’t just a sport though, for these girls roller derby is a way of life. They live, breathe and sleep derby. Known for their fishnet stockings, bootie shorts and fun play-on-word nicknames, derby girls are a new breed of women: sassy, athletic and fun.
The league is throwing a fundraising night at the Gearins Hotel on Friday the 1st of July. There will be some great music and performances including Bones and All, The Swingtanic Sextet, DJ Reubix, Em Fatale, The King Hits, Fire dancing and more. A raffle will be held on the night with some amazing prizes so get on down and support your local derby girls or sign up to become one yourself!
Blue Mountains Roller Derby League currently has around 40 members but is looking to extend its headcount! No experience is required and all skating levels are welcome. Derby girls come from all sorts of different backgrounds: nurses, artists, single mothers, business women, musicians, teachers, as long as you love to skate, they’d love to have you. You can sign up on the night of the fundraiser or email for more information at info@bluemountainsrollerderby.com
